It has become my go-to walk around lens when I don't know the focal length I will be shooting at. I have taken some fantastic photos with this lens, and have no plans to upgrade at any point.
A few more details: The massive front element lets in a ton of light, but requires expensive 77mm filters.
The good thing about that is that you can use them on all your lenses with inexpensive stepping rings, so you only have to buy one set of filters.
I don't particularly like the manual focus on this lens, as it is very sensitive and takes practice to master. However, this issue isn't enough for me to dock a star from the lens, and the AF is fast and consistent through the viewfinder and live view.
Overall, an excellent product that is a cornerstone of my kit. The lens has 7 blades aperture. Closer look exposes that even at F2.
The shot below shows the aperture shape at F5. The size of 7artisans 12mm F2. Of course this lens has smaller aperture. What I like to see is the built-in metal hood still allows to put camera on flat surface directed straight, which is very convenient for landscape shots from lower positions.
Also this 7artisans 12mm F2. Focus ring position is very convenient and it has nice grip and comfortable width.
Argh, I still need to put vinyl film on the mount to get rid of slight radial lens mount movement during focusing.
The shot below is taken through the window: Here are few vertical shots with 7artisans 12mm F2. I had to make few attempts for first dozen shots taken: This lens catches a lot into frame!
On the Fuji X shots X-E2s used this lens shows great sharpness in the all central area starting at F2. Sample shot to confirm that distortions are very well corrected by optics design.
This 7artisans lens has 7 blades aperture located between 6th and 7th elements. I like the lens design that keeps focusing moving parts inside — it significantly reduces dust collections comparign to the approach where front part is moving like 7artisans 35mm F1.
According to 7artisans 12mm F2. Adding that would surely improve already good optical results, but would signicifantly increase the lens cost.
Sample images on 7artisans site are quite descriptive, so image results completely fit my expectations. This 7artisans 12mm F2.
Strong points of this lens: I think this 7artisans 12mm F2. I enjoy using it so far, and plan to shoot with 12mm more once the weather is warmer and more sunny.
There are two public Flickr groups where you can find and also contribute more shots taken using different cameras and:. For those who enjoy it the most, there are two ways you can throw a few pennies into the proverbial tip jar: Patreon allows those of you who would like to support 35mmc on a monthly basis with a small regular donations.
Ko-Fi allows one off donations. I could probably stretch to purchasing this. Please give more details. Rob, thank you for feedback and good question.
Most of the lens I put on my current X-E2s sample are sitting firm. But often there is some level of radial movement when you try to rotate the lens body without unlocking the mount.
I had that experience with different lens including Rokinon, Samyang, 7artisans, and even few Fujinon XF zooms.
It varied on different Fuji X cameras I had: But Samyang and 7artisans lens focus takes more effort, and lens mount play is a bit disturbing.
It comes in about 60grms heavier than the claimed weight in the specs. Thanks for your review Cheers, Nigel. Hi Nigel, Thanks for interesting feedback and details.
Could you please clarify which mount do you use? My Fuji X mount sample of 7artisans 12mm F2. That is quite close to what I see on the 7artisans site specs: Hi Iurii Mines Fuji X mount too.
One thing I will have to do with this lens if I get it right by the pictures of the lens itself , is scale focus it to get as much of the interior in focus as possible.
What I noicd is that the focus scale just after the 2m mark goes to infinity …. Thanks for the good question Greg.

I'm just glad we have lenses to choose from which will keep all prices competitive. If Sigma, for example, was the only company offering lenses, they could charge whatever they wanted, and we'd all pay out the wazooooo..
There's no new tech, no new approach, it's just another set of manual focus lenses that are overpriced and overrated.
You'd have to be a fool to invest. There is way too much competition, which is usually good for the industry, but sometimes bad, it often forces an industry to price focused goods, not quality orientated goods.
If Irix weren't around nothing would change and nobody would miss them. There are a hundred other brands, most of which have better products to offer, Voigtlander owned by Cosina who make lenses for dozens of other brands , Sigma, Samyang, Tokina, Tamron, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Leica, Fuji etc.
Even Lensbaby have a clear point of difference, Irix have literally nothing in their line up that is unique and separates them from the competition inc.
And has an aperture ring. Very solid, metal body, superb mechanics and optics, typical for usually much more expensive lens. Mine was badly decentered and Adorama replaced it.
New one is a bit better but far away from what it should be. It would be better if they spent money they used to make fancy box on quality controll.
To me it is still a bit of magic that lens manufacturers can apply a coating to a lens which to a naked eye looks purple or green or blue or what ever and it does not affect color of the image.
It is pretty hard to come up with a decently sounding word and quite frankly whether they call it neutrino or pelegrino, it does not bother me, as long as it eliminates internal glare.
This lens at its pricepoint looks like a pretty good deal. Sometimes in images taken against sun one can see ghosting "suns" of different colors.
Maybe they alter the thickness of AR coating between the elements so the overall image color is neutral.. I would imagine so. The Irix 15mm has.
The color and contrast is very different and fun to shoot with. I only hope this one is the same. Most dSLR lenses follow the rules of the mount.
It's mainly lenses for mirrorless cameras that don't, often going contact-less, and even contact-built lenses may forgo automatic stop down.
I wish this were not the case. I tried it from Photo Plus Expo. They wanted to make E-mount version but they need to get permission and license first.
I would wait for E-mount tho. I thought Sony's E mount was "open"; is that an exaggerated claim? Interesting that even the K-mount gets it while neither of Sony's do.
The E mount is not open like m43 mount but if you fit some criteria Sony will share its mount specs with you. Few companies however fit the criteria but big names like Samyang, Tamron, Sigma and Tokina do.
Hopefully Irix and Laowa will join this club. Irix from PPE told me that they are waiting for a response from Sony. I am hoping if successful enough they will get the mount specs from Sony and launch a few AF versions of their existing lenses.
Well I took a good look at it at the Photkina, mechanics and ergonomics are suberb combined with a dbody. Sharpness and microcontast should be tested at different conditions and different distances.
But imho it's a high potential lens. From my impression its somewhere near the Sigma ART mm f1. No Nikon camera we've tested to date balances stills and video capture as well as the Nikon Z7.
Though autofocus is less reliable than the D, Nikon's first full-frame mirrorless gets enough right to earn our recommendation.
Nikon's Coolpix P has moved the zoom needle from 'absurd' to 'ludicrous,' with an equivalent focal length of mm. While it's great for lunar and still wildlife photography, we found that it's not suited for much else.
If you're interested in stills and video, though, it's knockout. The Nikon Z7 is slated as a mirrorless equivalent to the D, but it can't subject track with the same reliability as its DSLR counterpart.
AF performance is otherwise good, except in low light where hunting can lead to missed shots. We're well underway putting it through our range of standard tests — take a look at how it compares to the competition and our thoughts on using it so far.
These entry level cameras should be easy to use, offer good image quality and easily connect with a smartphone for sharing.

Sardonic G Any word when they'll be offering it in a Praktica mount? Apart from lenses of greater than mm focal length of course ;-.
Not one for me then. Canon EF is there. Can you believe it? EXkurogane I don't think I've seen a dedicated macro lens for those with 50mm and longer with apertures smaller than f2.
Foto64 Why f 2. Christoph65 Blackcoffee Although a great point, I think so many people want to be able to use it for other purposes.
On close focus even on 2. Korinth7 Many want a bright image in their viewfinder when using a macro, something lacking in an f8 or f5. Peter LO Diffraction has nothing to do with effective aperture.
EXkurogane Aha, focus stacking wide aperture shots is common in my workflow nowadays. AlexisH Looks nice, but they should plan a mirrorless version as well.
Grive There usually isn't much of an advantage in size on the telephoto end. AlexisH Because in the mirrorless market there may be more demand and less competition for such a product?
DL87 They are planning to make E-mount version but waiting for licensing from Sony. EXkurogane No AF, no sale for me, unfortunately.
